In France, New Year's Eve (31 December) is called la Saint-Sylvestre* and is usually celebrated with a feast, called le Réveillon de Saint-Sylvestre. The feast tends to include special items like champagne and foie gras, and the party can range from an intimate dinner with friends to une soirée dansante (ball).

At midnight, everyone kisses under the mistletoe** and offers their best wishes for the new year.

On New Year's Day, le Jour de l'An, friends and family share their New Year's resolutions and may also exchange cards and gifts.

The end of the holiday season is Epiphany, on 6 January, which in France includes a traditional cake called la galette des rois.

*Saint Sylvestre was Pope from 314 to 335 A.D., during the time of Constantine the Great. There is no particular link between Saint Sylvestre and the new year; it just so happens that 31 December is his feast day.

**Interestingly, kissing under the mistletoe is a New Year's custom in France, rather than a Christmas custom as in other countries.

În Franţa, Anul Nou (31 decembrie) este numit la Sfantul-Silvestru * si este, de obicei, sărbătorit cu un ospat, numit Reveilonul Sfantului Silvestru. Sărbătoarea tinde să includă anumite specialitati cum ar fi sampanie si foie gras, şi petrecerea poate varia de la o cină intimă cu prietenii pentru a o seara dansanta (bal).

La miezul nopţii, toată lumea se sărută sub vâsc ** , si oferă dorinţele lor cele mai bune pentru noul an.

În ziua de Anul Nou, prietenii, familia şi isi impartasesc rezoluţiile pentru noul an şi, de asemenea, pot face schimb de felicitari şi cadouri.

Sfârşitul sarbatorilor este Boboteaza, pe 6 ianuarie, care, în Franţa include un tort traditional numit Galette des Rois.

* Sfantul Silvestru a fost Papa intre 314 - 335 d.Hr., în timpul lui Constantin cel Mare. Nu există nicio legătură speciala intre Sfantul Silvestru şi noul an, ci doar aşa se întâmplă că pe 31 decembrie este sarbatorita ziua sa.

** Interesant, sarutul sub vasc este un obicei de An Nou în Franţa, decât un obicei de Crăciun precum în alte ţări.

A strange procession of elephants in Paris!

During the occupation, the shortage and rationing are the everyday lives of Parisians. There is little fuel and the images of the time show a few cars, cabs reappear, like the bicycle taxis and horse-drawn means.

But why elephants?

The most likely hypothesis is that these elephants, led by trainers, are part of a circus.

Indeed, in 1940, Cirque d'Hiver in Paris knows the unpleasant interlude of German management and that in March 1941, the facility will be taken up by its owners, the famous brothers Bouglione.

O procesiune de elefanti ciudat în Paris!

In timpul ocupatiei, lipsa şi raţiile sunt viaţa de zi cu zi a parizienilor. Există puţin combustibil şi imaginile arată câteva maşini, reapar taxiurile bicicletă şi mijloace trase de cai.

Dar de ce elefanţii?

Ipoteza cea mai probabilă este că acestei elefanti, condusi de dresori, sunt parte dintr-un circ.

Într-adevăr, în 1940, Cirque d'Hiver din Paris ia o pauza din cauza neplăcutului management german şi că, în martie 1941, facilitatea va fi luată de către proprietarii săi, celebrii fraţi Bouglione.

Smallest house in Paris-Cea mai mica casa din Paris

No doubt, this little shoe repair house, photographed in 1941, is the smallest shop in Paris.
Located on 39 rue du Château d'Eau in the 10th arrondissement, not far from the town hall, this home measures 1.10 m wide and 5 meters high, it is composed of a single span with a ground floor and one floor.
The story goes that a matter of inheritance would be responsible for the construction of this tiny house, the family owners of the passage between the rue du Chateau d'Eau and the Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin and put an end to disputes between them by blocking the passage through this strange house.
As the time passed, the repair house become a baby goods store.
The house is now abandoned.

Fără îndoială, această mică casă de reparaţii de încălţăminte, fotografiată în 1941, este cel mai mic magazin din Paris.
Situată pe 39 rue du Château d'Eau, în arondismentul 10, nu departe de primărie, această casă de măsoară 1.10 m lăţime şi 5 metri de mare, acesta este cu o singură deschidere, cu un parter şi un etaj.
Povestea spune ca o chestiune de moştenire ar fi responsabilă pentru construirea acestei case mici, intre familiile de proprietari a pasajului dintre Chateau d'Eau şi Faubourg-Rue Saint-Martin şi dorind să pună capăt disputelor au blocat trecerea prin această casă ciudată.
Odată cu trecerea timpului, casa de reparaţie a deveni un magazin de articole pentru copii.
Casa este acum abandonată.

Ladureé started as a bakery in 1862. Later as the female Paris society needed a place to socialize monsieur Ladureé changed it into the first ever "Salon de thé" in history. Here socialites would gather while enjoying wonderful pastries. Now there are Ladureé salons in Japan, England and Switzerland. All of the pastries are exceptional of course, but none of them have managed to rise to fame as the macaroon has.

Ladurée început ca o brutărie în 1862. Mai târziu, deoarece femeile Parisului aveau nevoie de un loc pentru a socializa monsieur Ladurée a transformat brutaria în primul "Salon de ceai " din istorie. Aici oamenii se adunau în timp ce se bucurau de minunatele produse de patiserie. Acum există Ladurée saloane în Japonia, Anglia şi Elveţia. Toate produsele sunt excepţionale, desigur, dar nici unul dintre ei au reuşit să se ridice la faima pe care o au aceste macaroons.

In 1878, for the Universal Exhibition, the first metal bridge, called Passy footbridge, is established on both sides of the 'île des Cygnes. To meet the need of the Universal Exhibition of 1900, it was necessary to replace the structure introducing a railway and a road. The project was finished only at the end of 1902.
Strengthening the work between 1930-1940 got removed some parts of the original decoration.
The Passy Viaduct bridge was named Bir Hakeim 1949
(In memory of a victory in 1942 by the forces of Free France in the Libyan desert).

În 1878, a fost construit pentru Expoziţia Universală, primul pod de metal, numit pasarela Passy, stabilit pe ambele maluri ale 'île des Cygnes - Insula de lebede. Pentru a satisface nevoia impusa de Expozitia Universala din 1900, s-a înlocuit cu o structură care a introdus o cale ferata si o sosea. Proiectul va fi realizat la sfârşitul anului 1902.
Consolidarea structurii dintre anii 1930-1940 a eliminat o parte din decoraţiunile originale.
Viaductul Passy pod a fost numit Bir Hakeim 1949
(În memoria victoriei obtinute in 1942 de către forţele de Franţa Liberă în deşertul libian).

Artist Ami Sioux had an amazing book idea: She asked fifty Paris residents to sketch maps to places that were important to them in their everyday lives. She then followed the maps and photographed the destinations.

Primul pod construit din lemn in anul 1827 , prabusit in 1873. El a fost înlocuit de un pod din fontă în 1875.
In capatul strazii care trece pe sub pod allée des Cygnes se gaseste o statuie din bronz , o Statuie a Libertatii la scara mai mica ( 1885 ) Initial orientata spre vest a fost intoarsa cu spatele la America apoi intoarsa din nou spre vest cu ocazia Expozitiei Universale din 1937.
Un nou pod de oţel a fost reconstruit în 1966-1968 din cauza ca nu facea fata circulatiei rutiere.
